Lorna Simpson combines image and text in ways that often critique the role of the image, particularly the body, within contemporary culture. Using the medium of photography, she isolates parts of the body and juxtaposes them with text to suggest differences of experience across age, race, class, and gender. Simpson’s work also examines the stereotypes and misidentifications imposed on black women.
