While Calder eventually scaled up many of his smaller projects, he also produced objects that were never enlarged, such as these three stabiles. Though they might be considered "unfulfilled" in one sense, they reveal directions in which Calder could have taken his monumental sculptures.
He believed that these intimate forms possessed their own inherent appeal, once stating, "Even in aluminum and very small, at the model stage, the object must please completely, whether it is intended to be made in large dimensions or not."
